FXFOWLE won an invited competition to design the building and interiors of a new environmentally responsible corporate headquarters building for SAP in suburban Philadelphia. The phased two-building complex integrates into the existing suburban office campus. To preserve views of the wooded site and complement the existing structures, the expansion is designed as a series of volumes which nestle into the topography, curving organically along the grade. The open plan focuses the office areas toward the north side of the building, capitalizing on the views to the landscape, bringing in soft northern light, and service cores grouped together in nodes along an anchoring spine. A hallmark of the new design is the atrium, shaded by warmly-detailed brise soliel, glulam columns, and enriched with a fieldstone wall at the base. Green roofs further weave the structure into the landscape and serve as part of a calibrated system of sustainable strategies, aiming for LEED Platinum rating by USGBC.
